Demi Lovato is non-binary and has changed their pronouns to they/them.
In their new podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato, the pop star came out as non-binary in the introduction of the episode before diving into a personal conversation with Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender non-conforming writer and performer.
“Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them,” said Demi. “I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering.”
Demi posted the video along with string of tweets and explained that the decision had come “after a lot of healing & self-reflective work”.
I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) May 19, 2021
Demi further explained that they are still working through things,”I want to make it clear that I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert, or a spokesperson…”.
The Importance of Pronouns
We chatted a bit more about pronouns and their importance before; a person who identifies as non-binary does not define themselves exclusively as masculine or feminine and generally prefers they/them pronouns, rather than he/she.
It’s great that Demi feels that they can live a more authentic life by identifying as they/them and that they felt comfortable sharing that with the world. It’s a big thing to do, but it ultimately normalises gender identify and opens up the conversation for more people to feel safe and comfortable to declare themselves.
Well done to them!
